A few weeks ago, I was honored to photograph Diwali for the Indian community in Monterey Bay through ICOMB. The festival of lights is such a special time of year for Hindu people, and it was amazing to see how it brought everyone together.
I think it’s a privilege to do these kinds of photo shoots. You appreciate that someone trusts you with their culture and religion. That trust means showing up with curiosity and respect, knowing that these moments are deeply personal and important to the people celebrating them.
I learned so much while working with the organizers of this event. For example, I had no idea that Diwali is celebrated over five days! Each day is filled with its own unique traditions and rituals, from lighting diyas—small earthen lamps symbolizing light over darkness and good over evil—to colorful rangoli designs and prayers for prosperity and family well-being.
Take my own culture, for example. When I did all kinds of photography in the lead up to Día de los Muertos, I think about how much those images mean to my family and community. We celebrate life, honor loved ones, and connect with our traditions. As a photographer, it’s about capturing not just the event but the emotions—the love, the pride, the memories that people carry with them.
Some of the images (see left) are just amazing. I slowed the shutter speed—basically, leaving the camera lens open a little longer to let more light in—to create what almost looks like artifacts of light in motion. (Sorry, getting a bit technical here, but I loved how these turned out.)
In the end, I think what really helps is the beautiful colors. From what people are wearing to the lights all around, I was given so much to work with, which makes the job easy and the final product just right.
It was a terrific event, and I hope I get the chance to do it again next year. Being part of these cultural events in Salinas and Monterey County is where I really discovered how vibrant our area truly is.
